Three Trapped Tigers, who released their debut EP in November, were one of the most exciting new bands we heard last year. Their sound splices together Hella, Squarepusher and The Bad Plus and then sucks some of the jazz out to make room for punky energy and some smart musical innovations of their own. All five tracks on the EP, all handily untitled, are instrumental, save for a few lyric-less vocalizations, and are based on some solid grooves that hook you in and hold you close, nose to nose for the duration. Check out the first track on their MySpace page for their most immediate work, which mixes a full-on spazz out with cool, limb-twitching electronics, ambient keys and some fantastic drum work. After that, the rest of the tracks seem more restrained, but are no less impressive. With gigs galore lined up, and journalists and DJs alike getting steamed up over them, expect to hear a lot about these guys in 2009.
